Alternative Therapies Asthma: Alternative Therapies For Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung disease which affects at least 24 million people only in United States itself. Symptoms of asthma include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and increased mucus production. Complementary and alternative therapies (CAM) are commonly used by people with asthma due to dissatisfaction with conventional therapies and concerns about steroid side-effects. According to a survey of 48 multicultural parents of children with asthma, 81% of the parents used one or more forms of alternative therapies asthma for treating their childs asthma. These alternative therapies asthma have included prayer, herbal teas, vitamins, supplements and massage. Other popular treatments include consumption of antioxidants vitamins C and E, selenium, and zinc. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and other supplements like herb Petasites hybridus are also used to decrease inflammation.
Mentioned below are some alternative therapies asthma in detail -

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) this form of alternative therapies asthma uses different types of herbs. The primary herb commonly used is ma huang, also known as ephedra. Ephedra, whether from a 'natural herb' or from a laboratory, is a compound which activates the sympathetic nervous system. By means of engaging nerves, ephedra helps in opening airways and reducing secretions. However, this is a very non-specific treatment and also effects throughout the entire body, including brain and heart.

Acupuncture Acupuncture is another of the alternative therapies asthma. This involves the placement of very fine needles into strategic points on the body. The specific placement of needles is thought to restore proper balance of 'yin and yang'. This form of CAM has not been seen (by scientific evaluation) to offer any benefits to those suffering from allergies or asthma.

Homeopathy - Classical homeopathy includes dissolving of herbs or allergens into water to extremely minute concentrations. This dilution can proceed to the point where the water no longer contains any physical remnants of the herb. The assumption in this modality is that some essential quality of the herb remains in the water. While some studies show equivocal results, others seem to give positive results. From this we conclude homeopathy is also one of the alternative therapies asthma.

Ginko Biloba - Alternative therapies asthma also includes Ginko Biloba. This herb is also used for many illnesses. TCM holds that this herb is useful in suppressing wheezing and expelling phlegm. Scientific study shows that the active ingredient in this herb may antagonize platelet activating factor (PAF) which induces bronchoconstriction (wheezing). Therefore, this herb benefits some asthma sufferers.

Alternative therapies asthma have shown good success rate. Thus more and more people have preferred one or more forms of alternative therapies asthma for their treatment.
